Parliamentary Reform Banner, United Brushmakers of Edinburgh
Description
One blue wool parliamentary Reform Banner for the United Brushmakers of Edinburgh. The title scroll cartouche reads, 'UNITED BRUSHMAKERS' (above) 'OF EDINBURGH' (below) (black lettering shadowed in dark pink on pink). The Edinburgh coat of arms is in the centre, the motto scroll is to the left and right of the coat of arms, 'NISI DOMINUS' (left) 'FRUSTRA' (right) (yellow on blue). Along the bottom are roses and foliage, and the date, '1884. Along the top is blue ribbon mantling on the left and right, and is inscribed, 'CARRIED in 1832', in the centre. The banner has a gold silk fringe (3 sides) and red wool tape along left side.

This banner was made for the Radical Demonstration in favour of the Franchise Bill in 1884 and carried on the reverse of the silk banner of 1832 (HH1060/47). The banners were separated in the conservation process in
1991.
