Description
officers, that the "Scottish Women", do not as a general rule (at home!) dress in breeches & puttees!
The pontoon-bridge at Tsakcha is constructed of boats. The congestion before we reached the bridge was too terrible, troops, wounded, refugées [refugees] all wanting to cross at one & the same moment! Most "pressing" of all were the "gallant" Rumanian troops!! Not only do they not attempt to fight, but they also show a very keen disposition to get out of their own country as quickly as possible & show a holy fear of being taken prisoners. As long as they get away, of course, nothing else matters!
We saw hundreds & hundreds of Austrian prisoners just across the frontier, working at the Danube fortifications. I felt sorry for them, they seemed such kind, gentle creatures, not one of them "wanting war" - very different in every way from either the Boche or Bulgar captives.
At present we are resting our "gees" for an hour, just across the frontier, on the Russian side of the Danube. It's hot & dusty (a sudden heat wave) & looks like thunder.
