Description

A crowd gathers outside Black Turnpike, a building with turrets, large windows and a fine carved arch over the doorway located in Peebles Wynd, Edinburgh. A woman, Queen Mary, surrounded by men with swords, rides sidesaddle and is guarded by soldiers on horses.

The inset is a detailed drawing of the heraldic carving over the entrance into the Black Turnpike Tower with twin unicorns supporting a crowned shield with a lion on it. Artist has annotated inset with " Queen Mary brought prisoner and confined in the Black Turnpike, south side of High Street near the Tron Church, taken down when the South Bridge was opened 1787".

The High Street is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile that runs from George IV Bridge down to its' junction with Jeffrey Street and St. Mary's Street.
