Description
Turquoise silk banner with a wool fringe and a different painted design each side. Reverse: title scroll, BOOKBINDERS' & MACHINE RULERS' CONSOLIDATED UNION in red lettering on pink background, EDINBURGH BRANCH below. The main design is a shield with four quadrants and a bookbinder and machine ruler as supporters standing in a landscape with a flaming sky. JUNE 28TH A.D. 1788 painted on the mountains behind. Four scenes: a man going to work; three men looking at poster advertising a meeting on unemployment; an old man reading a paper in a sitting room; a funeral with four men and a minister standing around a grave. Above, a dove flying across the flaming sun, clasped hands with WE JOIN TO PROTECT on either side, INSTITUTED JANUARY 1ST 1836 above. Mottos, BIND RIGHT WITH MIGHT; UNITY FRIENDSHIP & PROSPERITY TO TRADE.
