Description
Red and pink damask silk banner with blue border painted with a different design painted on each side and silk corded fringe.
Obverse: title scroll, AMALGAMATED SOCIETY OF WOODWORKERS. The woodworkers' emblem: an arch with the figures of JOSEPH OF NAZARETH, the Patron Saint of Carpenters; JUSTICE, with a sword and scales; TRUTH, with a mirror; INDUSTRY, with a distaff and beehive, holding a scroll with LABOUR IS THE SOURCE OF WEALTH; ART with a palette and bronze bust. Mottos, UNION IS
STRENGTH, UNITED TO PROTECT NOT COMBINED TO INJURE, CREDO SED CAVEO, INDUSTRY AND BENEVOLENCE UNITE US IN FRIENDSHIP. Within the pillars of the
arch are cameos: PEACE; an ACCIDENT;
SECTION OF A SHIP CABIN; SUPERANNUATION; FRIENDSHIP, £100 BENEFIT; a staircase; THE RELIEF OF THE WIDOW.
Within the arch, a detailed picture of the centering of an arch, taken from a trade handbook, and the interior of a joiners' workshop. The supporters hold a banner, EAST OF SCOTLAND DISTRICT.
