Title
The Blommersdijk
Description
"The 'Blommersdijk,' a Dutch freighter of 4,850 tons, bound from New York to Rotterdam, was torpedoed and sunk on 8 October 1916, by the German submarine, U 53, which had appeared in Newport Harbour, U.S.A., the previous Saturday, Bringing a personal letter from the Kaiser to President Wilson. ... The cartoon satirizes the helplessness of the Dutch Government in face of 'the sea vulture.' The episode was a diplomatic comedy played with more applause at Berlin than at the Hague."
