Winston Churchill, more famous for his role as Prime Minister and war leader during the fight against Hitler in World War Two, was also First Lord of the Admiralty during World War One. Whilst Lord of the Admiralty Churchill put a massive emphasis on modernisation and tiresomely worked to see that new ships in the fleet were built with oil powered engines and that naval forces should be complimented by an air force. However in 1915 he was removed from the post because of his proposal of the Battle of Gallipoli which was a naval disaster for the allies.
