The Royal High School building in Regent Road was designed by Thomas Hamilton and housed the school from 1829-1968. When the school relocated to Barnton the building was converted for government use. The SNP, led by Alex Salmond, were in favour of using it as the home of the new Scottish Parliament, but the Scotland Office decided to build new premises at Holyrood. The Royal High School building has since been considered for a number of uses, including a national photography centre, music school and luxury hotel.
