Description
"The cartoon, dated 13 March 1915, satirises Prince Buelow's generosity in offering Italy handsome 'concessions' at the expense of her ally, Austria. The German Chancellor announced in the Reichstag, 18 May, that the terms finally proposed to secure Italy's neutrality were the cession of the Trentino, territory on the right bank of the Isonzo, an Italian University in Trieste, Austria's retirement from Albania, etc."

Kaiser Wilhelm II presents an Italian politician with Emperor Franz Joseph's severed calf and foot. Trentino was a disputed territory on the Italian-Austro-Hungarian border that Austria-Hungary possessed prior to the war. Wilhelm offers Italy Trentino at the expense and pain of Franz Joseph and Austria-Hungary. Italy declared itself a neutral country in 1914, despite its alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary since 1882. However, it declared war on Austria-Hungary in May 1915, joining the Allied forces.
