Image taken from an historical article in The Evening Dispatch, from Friday April 8th 1938. The image is captioned, 'The scene in the Grassmarket twenty-two years ago after the first Zeppelins had raided Scotland and dropped bombs in various parts of Edinburgh.

This press cutting shows the crowds gathering to witness the damage caused by the only air raid that occurred on Edinburgh during World War One. The image was taken on the morning after the Zeppelin raid on Edinburgh and Leith on April 2nd 1916, a Sunday. The Zeppelin raid passed over much of Edinburgh, with reported damage occurring at George Watson's College, Hadden Court, Lauriston Place, the Grassmarket and most significantly, Marshall Street where lives were lost.
