Description
Accompanying text reads:
"This, or something like it, meets the eye almost everywhere behind the Western Front. The ghost of a dead village in the distance can be seen through, like the phantom ship in the "Ancient Mariner." The desolation, however, does not last. The old agriculture creeps steadily forward in the wake of the advancing Allied armies, and this summer good fields of grain are waving on land that looked almost hopelessly derelict last year. The work of reclamation has received much help from British military authorities who have instituted regular "agricultural departments" for the assistance of the returning farmers."
