Title
The Last Throw
Description
"This cartoon appeared in the 'Telegraph,' 2 April 1916, in the week when the Germans were launching ferocious assaults on the Avocourt-Melancourt line, two months after the opening of the interminable battle of Verdun, and five weeks after General Petain had arrived at the most critical hour and reorganized the French defence. Ten days later, the grand assault of five German divisions on the whole front west of the river, had come to nothing, after incredible sacrifices of men, whole regiments being shattered and reduced to skeletons."
