Title
Henry Raeburn, an etching and engraving by the artist William Nicholson
Description
The Scottish portrait painter, Henry Raeburn (1756 - 1823), looks out of the picture, his left hand resting on his chin, his right arm supporting his other elbow. The portrait shows his upper body only, which is circling slightly to the right. The etched line (as opposed to the engraved one) shows clearly in the lower right arm and hand.
William Nicholson's initials are written in the right-hand corner; in the left are the words "Ipse pinx." (perhaps "Ipse pinxit") as the picture is drawn after Henry Raeburn's self-portrait in the National Galleries of Scotland's collection.
