Uji (the place name in Kyoto) is one of the famous places for production of tea in Kyoto. It is believed that growing tea started in the early 13th century, and drinking tea became popular among tea lovers in 14th century; since then, the Uji tea has been regarded as high quality tea in Japan. Nowadays, machine picking has become the normal method with the industrial modernization but hand picking has still continued for high grade tea, as in the photo. Tea was one of the important exporting industries in Japan in the 19th century when this photo was taken.
