The British Women's Temperance Association, Scottish Christian Union (BWTA SCU) was founded in 1878 with the objective of binding together 'the women of Scotland for the promotion of total abstinence principles and the prohibition of liquor traffic'. It was part of the 19th century Temperance Movement that worked to combat the serious and widespread problem of heavy drinking. By 1908 there were 332 branches and 80,000 members throughout Scotland. The BWTA finally disbanded in the spring of 1991 with five branches and fewer than 100 members. The archive which included the two banners was handed over to the museum in July 1991.
