In the image of the minstrel, Crane, like in the rest of the book, is inviting the reader to visit an idealised medieval fantasy. The affiliation with medieval images is seen in both Pre-Raphaelite and the Arts and Craft art. Crane wrote the poem that accompanies the image; he writes, 'She held her court in gardens green/Fair hung with tapestry of leaves/where threads of gold the sun enweaves/ with checquered patter on the floor...' The emphasis is on craft and design tying it to the Arts and Crafts Movement. He is educating children about the importance of creation.
