Alexander Carlyle, an etching and engraving by the artist William Nicholson
The church minister of Inveresk, Midlothian, Alexander Carlyle (1722 - 1805), is drawn as a half-length portrait in profile. He wears a coat with the frills of his necktie showing as he looks out of the picture to the left. He is seated on a chair, and beside him, also on the left of the picture, is an inkwell and quill, a scroll of paper, and some books. On the right-hand side of the picture are William Nicholson's initials and the date 1820.
