Title
Section from Theatres of the East, a Japanese handscroll painting
Description
Section of a handscroll painting depicting the theatre district of Edo, or Tokyo in Japan as it is known today.

Reading left to right, this is the end section of the scroll painting which depicts a men-only bathhouse where several men wearing robes are bathing. The water is carried in small wooden tubs. More bathers approach the bathhouse entrance on the right and some carry their robes over their shoulders. On the far right, a man takes water from a well using a long-handled pail. A steam-bath is depicted towards the back of the bathhouse.
