Title
Thoroughwart Flowers (Fujibakama) Chapter 30 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
In this image, Mitsuuji (Genji) is shown dressed in a deep blue kimono decorated with irises. He is presenting a real iris flower to a young woman dressed in a red floral kimono who stands by his side. Mitsuuji kneels down next to the woman and is shown leaning back and turning away from her as he holds up the flower. Mitsuuji looks as though he is trying to placate the woman but in actuality he may be trying to peer behind the screen. Mitsuuji grasps the woman's long sleeve in his left hand. Behind them is a two-leaf screen decorated with an image of a hanging curtain and golden clouds. Half-hidden behind the screen there is a discarded kimono and a sword.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Fujibakama', Chapter 30. In this chapter, Tamakazura (To no Chujo's daughter) expresses her reluctance to enter palace service as Mistress of Staff. She is also aware that she must free herself from Genji's amorous advances by distancing herself from him. Yugiri visits Tamakazura and makes known his feelings towards her but she is repelled by his confessions. Kashiwagi (Tamakazura's brother and former suitor) brings messages to Tamakazura from their father. Many disappointed suitors make their last attempts to win Tamakazura's affection before she enters palace service.
