This knitted sock is an example of the 'comforts' produced in their thousands by adults and children around the country. They were collected by the Red Cross and other organisations for distribution at the Front.
Patterns were often issued to knitters to ensure that comforts were usable in the field. The items produced supplemented official Army-issue clothing.
