Title
Wind in the Pines (Matsukaze) Chapter 18 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
In this image Mitsuuji (Genji) is shown in a bathhouse, crouching next to the wellhead that draws water from the river below. He is elegantly dressed in a purple kimono patterned with floral roundels. He holds a red round fan in one hand. To his left, stands a woman holding a young child. The child is dressed in a red kimono and also holds a small red fan. Behind them a curtain hung in a doorway bears a 'Genji mon', a design made from incense sticks that is associated with a specific chapter from the 'Tale of Genji'. A hot bath and a bamboo water bucket are visible in the background.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Matsukaze', Chapter 18. In this chapter Genji brings Hanachirusato to live in the newly built east pavilion. After much deliberation the Lady of Akashi, accompanied by her mother, brings Genji's daughter to Kyoto. The Novice makes arrangements for them to live in a property beside the River Oi. The Akashi Lady misses her home and her father the Novice. While she waits for Genji to visit her she plays music on her kin and the sorrowful sound mixes with the wind in the pines.
Genji explains to Murasaki that he wants to inspect a villa that he is having built in Katsura. Genji uses this opportunity to visit the Lady of Akashi and to see his daughter for the first time.
Genji realises that it would be difficult to bring the Akashi Lady to Nijo as she would feel socially inferior. Genji discusses with Murasaki the idea of bringing his daughter by the Akashi Lady to Nijo to be raised by Murasaki.
