Title
The Imperial Progress (Miyuki) Chapter 29 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
Two young boys dressed in kimono and holding fans are depicted playing by the river's edge. The eldest boy wears a purple kimono decorated with maple leaves and is stood balanced upon a jagged rock. A woman stands close by supervising the children. She is elegantly dressed in a red floral kimono with a tie-dye (shibori) pattern, and she has draped over her hair a cream and white head cover. Behind the woman is a curtain decorated with horizontal bands of colour and a pine tree. In the river two fans float on the water.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Miyuki', Chapter 29. In this chapter, Emperor Reizei makes an imperial progress to Oharano and many courtiers join him to take part in the hawking. Tamakazura sees Emperor Reizei (Genji and Fujitsubo's son) in his palanquin and decides that he is the most attractive man in the party. Genji makes preparations for Tamakazura's donning of the train ceremony and her entrance into palace service as an intimate of the Emperor. Genji visits To no Chujo's mother and explains that Tamakazura is actually her grand daughter. To no Chujo is summoned to Sanjo to meet with Genji. He misunderstands the purpose of this meeting and incorrectly anticipates that he will be pressured by Genji to accept Yugiri's courtship of Kumoi no Kari. To no Chujo has previously objected to the relationship between his daughter and Genji's son on the basis of Yugiri's low rank. However, To no Chujo is surprised and delighted to learn that Tamakazura is his daughter and he agrees to take part in her donning of the train ceremony.
