The Tendril Wreath (Tamakazura) Chapter 22 from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
A woman is shown holding a folded kimono with a colourful chrysanthemum pattern. She has just removed the kimono from a black lacquer chest in order to display the fabric for Mitsuuji (Genji) and his female companion to view. Mitsuuji points towards the kimono with a closed fan as he speaks to his kneeling companion.
Mitsuuji can be identified by his lobster tail topknot that is bound with a purple cord. He wears an elegant outer kimono with a blue bird motif upon a purple and white ground. His companion wears an elaborate floral headdress, and a lilac kimono patterned with a yellow chrysanthemum design.
The background colour consists of a subtle gradation from dark blue to sage green. This effect has been created using 'bokashizuri'. In the top left hand corner the branches of a tree are shown to be in bud.

This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).
