The Buddha of Kamakura is located at Kotoku-in temple in Kanagawa Prefecture. It is not known by whom and when this bronze Buddha statue was built. The statue is 11.3 metres tall and weighs about 121 tons. It is one of the national treasures, and according to Azuma kagami, a medieval chronicle, the construction of the Buddha statue was started in 1252. The statue was initially enshrined within a hall, but the building was destroyed by storms in 1334 and 1369. Although the hall was rebuilt, another storm destroyed it in 1498. Since then, the statue has stood in the open air and has become a famous tourist attraction. Visitors can enter the statue's interior.
