The Tendril Wreath (Tamakazura) Chapter 22 from the "Tale of Genji" inspired series "Murasaki Shikibu Genji Cards"
Description
Two Japanese women wearing brightly coloured kimono are talking to one another. The one on the right has tied around her head a cloth with the Japanese character for 'festival' written on it. She is holding a pipe in one hand and in the other, a tall bamboo pole with branches and paper lanterns attached. The branches are hung with folded white paper (shide) used in Shinto purification rites. The other lady has a fan in one hand and a wooden puppet in the other. Behind them rests a portable shrine (mikoshi) ornamented with pines trees, a a rising sun, magpies and a crane.
