The accompanying text in 'The Clans of the Scottish Highlands' by James Logan begins as follows: "CLAN DONNCHAIDH - THE ROBERTSONS The common tradition has derived this clan from the MacDonalds, but recent investigations have led to proofs of a different origin. They are shown by these authorities to be descended from the ancient Earls of Athol, carrying on the male line of inheritance after the death of Henry, last of these nobles. Donnchadh, or Duncan, who flourished about 1360, appears to have given the patronymic to the clan; while, from Raibeart ri'ach who died in the reign of James II, the more common designation, Robertson, was acquired. From their principal residence the chiefs were distinguished as the Struan Robertsons, a style only used besides in the case of Clunie MacPherson. The Gaëlic Struthan - streamy, is prettily descriptive of the landscape surrounding the mansion."
