View from Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, showing Dynamic Earth
Description
A view from Holyrood Park of the Edinburgh cityscape. The dome of the Dynamic Earth building dominates the foreground and stands in front of the buildings of Holyrood Road. The skyline features the clock tower of the Balmoral Hotel, the GPO building and the Governor's House of the Old Calton Gaol. Part of the Forth Rail Bridge can just be made out in the background.

Our Dynamic Earth is a permanent exhibition based on the edge of Holyrood Park, immediately to the south of the Scottish Parliament. The story of the Earth's development is told here through a series of galleries which employ exciting audio visual effects and interactive exhibits. The distinctive building which houses the exhibition was designed by Sir Michael Hopkins, and built between 1997-99 on a site donated by the brewers Scottish and Newcastle.
Edinburgh's Balmoral Hotel stands on the corner of North Bridge and Princes Street. The hotel was designed by William Hamilton Beatie. Its construction took place alongside that of the new North Bridge, and was completed in 1902. Formerly called the North British Hotel, it was owned by the North British Railway Company. It was sold by British Rail in the 1980's, and reopened in 1991 under its new name following extensive refurbishment. Its distinctive clock tower forms an unmistakable part of Edinburgh's skyline. It stands at just under 60 metres, with the clock face itself, designed by Hamilton and Inches, being taller than a double-decker bus.
