James Hogg, an etching and engraving by the artist William Nicholson
The poet, novelist, and farmer, James Hogg ('The Ettrick Shepherd', 1770 - 1835), sits slightly turned in a half-length portrait, his face looking directly out of the picture. The portrait shows him as a young man wearing a coat, waistcoat and necktie - and over the top of it all, tartan cloth as a full or belted plaid. On the left-hand side are William Nicholson's initials and the date 1817.
