The National Museum of Scotland is situated on Chambers Street, Edinburgh. It comprises two buildings, the 19th century Royal Scottish Museum building and the late 20th century Museum of Scotland building. The former was designed by Francis Fowke and begun in 1861. It houses exhibits from around the world, covering a wide range of subjects including art, culture and natural history. The great hall in the main block is a wonderfully light construction of glass and iron, reminiscent of the Crystal Palace. The striking Museum of Scotland building was designed by Benson and Forsyth architects, and opened in 1998. Its exhibitions tell the story of Scotland's people, land and culture.
