Regardless of the modernisation of weaponry during the First World War, animals still played an important role in war related efforts. Horses, oxen, and donkeys were often used to pull heavy field guns into position or to remove dead or wounded soldiers from the battlefields in horse-drawn ambulances. Having prepared for war by implanting a breeding and registration programme, Germany was well equipped to meet the demand for horses, having a ratio of one horse for every three soldiers at the onset of war. Britain, however, was not prepared and had to import horses from North and South America to keep up with demand.
Horses were vulnerable to disease, exhaustion, and, as cavalry was a regular part of WWI conflict, gunfire and other battlefield dangers. As many as 120,000 horses were treated in veterinary field hospitals in a typical year of fighting.
