Description
The image depicts a dramatic size contrast between two figures, both in period dress with tricorn hats, waistcoats, breeches, and carrying pistols. The dominant figure stands prominently in the foreground, appearing much larger, while a significantly smaller figure stands behind, also in a dueling pose with a pistol.

The accompanying text in the volume begins as follows:
"James MacRae, Esq., of Holmains, had the misfortune to obtain a celebrity, by no means enviable, as a duellist. He was a capital shot, and, it was said, obtained his proficiency by firing at a barber's block, kept by him for that purpose. In April 1790, the event occured which had the effect of exiling him from his native land."
This biographical sketch goes on to describe a dispute between MacRae and Sir George Ramsay over the behaviour of the latter's footman. This dispute culminated in the death of Sir George Ramsay on the 16th of April 1790, caused by wounds he sustained in a duel with MacRae at Musselburgh two days previously.
