Description

A procession marches towards the shore, past the stone square tower which is built on top of a rocky promontory. The crowd includes men on horseback and a coffin is being carried. Observers are watching from the sides and look down from the top of the tower. People are setting sail on boats. A small tower is visible on the island of Little Cumbrae across the Firth of Clyde.

Portencross Castle was built in the mid to late fourteenth centuries. Portencross harbour is believed to have been the departure point for funerals of Scottish kings setting off to be buried on the Isle of Iona between around the ninth and the eleventh centuries. This image represents Skene's imagined idea of what Portencross may have looked like in the past.
