Planting of a new tree in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh

Description

A crane carries a tree towards its planting area through a narrow roadway between metal barriers. The tree's branches are secured together and it's progress is monitored by two workmen walking in front of the crane. Another construction worker wearing high visibility clothing and a hard hat walks ahead of the operation. The construction site is surrounded by the tenement buildings of the Grassmarket.

The Grassmarket is an open area situated below Edinburgh Castle at the west end of the Cowgate. It was, for many centuries, an important venue for commercial and social activity in the Old Town. A weekly market was held here from the 15th to the early 20th century. It was also the site of many public executions. The Grassmarket continues to be a popular area for socialising, with a large number of pubs and restaurants.
