Title
Lauriston Place, looking west - showing north end of Middle Meadow Walk
Description
A busy street scene in Lauriston Place in Edinburgh, where people walk along the road and pavements. On one side there are shops and a tearoom, Jamiesons, which has canopies over its front window. On the opposite side there are horse-drawn carriages outside the Royal Infirmary. Further along from the hospital there are two columns with unicorn statues on top, which mark the entrance to Middle Meadow Walk.
This is a photograph by a member of the Edinburgh Photographic Society.

Lauriston Place in Edinburgh runs west from the south end of Forrest Road to Tollcross. Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary was situated on Lauriston Place until 2003.
The Meadows were created on the site of the Borough Loch after it was drained in the mid 17th century. Originally called Hope Park after its creator, Sir Thomas Hope, the park became popular for both recreation and the grazing of livestock. During the Second World War the Meadows were used for the cultivation of vegetables to feed Edinburgh's residents. Golf has been played on the adjacent Links since possibly as early as the 15th century, with a club formally established there in 1535
