Description
The interior of the Fellows' Luncheon and Tea Room at the Scottish Zoological Park, Corstorphine, Midlothian. The room has an ornate cornice, Rococo plasterwork and fireplace. A chandelier is hanging from the ceiling. The cafe is laid out with tables covered in white cloths, all set for tea with teapots and cutlery. Each table has wooden chairs around it, which have a pierced design on the backrest. Palms decorate the room. Two waitresses are standing, wearing dark dresses, white aprons and caps.

This image has been chosen for the Edinburgh - Past and Present Exhibition by the Rt. Rev. Brian Smith, Bishop of Edinburgh - "As a boy I shared in many benefits of Edinburgh life - Zoo, Museums, Botanics, Galleries. I became an 'Associate' at the Zoo - free admission and invitation to a Christmas party in this Fellows' House. This photo also reminds us of Edinburgh tea rooms before the rise of the modern café" The Rt. Rev. Brian Smith.
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland was founded in 1909 by Edinburgh lawyer Thomas Hailing Gillespie.The 85 acre site in Corstorphine was purchaced in 1913 by the Society and Edinburgh Town Council. This site is still home to Edinburgh Zoo. The Zoo was opened to the public on 22 July 1913. It currently houses some 1000 animals. Edinburgh Zoo is embarking on an ambitious development plan lasting roughly 20 years at a projected cost of 85 million pounds.
