The Wellington statue, Edinburgh, erected 18th June, 1852

Description

An engraving of the Wellington memorial statue sited at the east end of Princes Street, Edinburgh. Wellington is depicted on his horse Copenhagen, that he rode in the Battle of Waterloo. The monument is surrounded by metal railings and several groups of Victorian people are standing beside them admiring the statue. They include a soldier in uniform. A small dog also looks up towards the horse.

The memorial to the Duke of Wellington is one of a series of monuments celebrating the British victory in the Napoleonic Wars. Wellington defeated the French at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, and is depicted on his horse Copenhagen, the battle horse he used at Waterloo. The statue was erected in 1852, designed by Sir John Steell, the sculptor to Queen Victoria who was knighted for his services in 1876.
