Hard Times is Dickens' tenth novel and his shortest, but one of his least popular with Victorian readers. The story is set in the provincial factory town of Coketown.
Josiah Bounderby is an unpleasant banker, mill owner, and a self-professed self-made man. However, his claims of being abandoned as a child are proved false when the mother he discarded is found.
