Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens were established on the site of the Nor' Loch which was drained during the 18th century. West Princes Street Gardens contains the Ross Fountain and Bandstand, and the famous Floral Clock. Both East and West Princes Street Gardens house various statues of notable figures and the East Gardens are home to the distinctive memorial and tourist attraction, the Scott Monument. West Princes Street Gardens were originally for the exclusive use of the residents of Princes Street, but was opened to the public in 1876. City Architect, Robert Morhan planned the new park including the gardener's cottage at the eastern end of the West Gardens.
