The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of the Right Hon. the Earl of Haddington, is situated in the parish of Whitekirk and Tyninghame, East Lothian. It was originally a plain old Scottish mansion of large size, but about the year 1829 it was altered and enlarged under the direction of the well-known architect, Mr Burn, who modernised the whole by facing it with the red sandstone of the district. Its site is a plateau about 60 feet above the level of the estuary of the Tyne, which at high water has the appearance of an extensive wood-fringed lake, and which when the tide is out offers no eyesore, as it is covered with green vegetation'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Tyninghame has now been converted into residential flats.
