Description

A view of a small house situated beside a loch with a steep hillside in the distance. There are sailing boats and rowing boats on the water and a group of people standing by the shore. The women are wearing long dresses and bonnets and watching whilst the men are carrying crates and boxes down to the water's edge. A man is standing beneath the tall tree by the side of the house and mending a fishing net which rests on a couple of barrels.

Item is dated 1st October 1833. Glen Finart lies on the banks of Loch Long in Argyll and Bute. Loch Long is a sea loch which extends north from the Firth of Clyde and is a popular fishing destination. Typical fish that can be caught are plaice, cod, whiting and mackerel. Recent excavations ont he north-east side of the loch have revealed a small settlement which was occupied from 1501 into the 1800s, and which may have resembled the settlement depicted in this drawing by Skene.
