Title
Allan Ramsay's shop in process of demolition
Description
A photograph of the building that was formerly Allan Ramsay's shop at 153 High Street, Edinburgh in the process of demolition. The close up image shows a very dilapidated building with many broken windows and peeling paintwork. Three workmen can be seen looking out of the windows, one is standing behind a ladder. The sign of the building says that it was being used as Hair Dressing Rooms prior to demolition and there is also a sign advertising ice cream for sale. Between 1711 and 1725 the poet Allan Ramsay resided, and ran his bookshop in premises on Edinburgh's High Street, opposite the head of Niddry's Wynd, now Niddry Street. Following the success of his pastoral work 'The Gentle Shepherd' Ramsay moved to premises further up the High street in the now demolished Luckenbooths. A commemorative sign is visible in this image. It reads: "This house was occupied by Allan Ramsay, Poet and Bookseller, 1711-1725". This building is no longer extant.
