Description
They have curtains all around - protection against sun & rain - are lined with white & the canopy edged with a deep, tasselled frill! We went across to a place called Wingli, a quaint little village on the W. side of the Island. The view there was lovely & the sea so clear and blue. We saw Valetta, Città Vecchi, St Paul's Bay & away to the rocky coast of Gozo Island, with the town of Victoria standing out clearly against the sky-line. At first sight Malta seems to be a land of stones & stone-walls! There are stones everywhere & seldom a tree to be seen! All the houses are built of stone, in fact it is often difficult to discern which are houses & which stonewalls! It would indeed be a desolate island, were it not for the "patches" of vegetation one suddenly comes upon every now and then. The patches form a kind of oasis in the midst of a bare & barren land. After leaving Wingli & the coast, we drove home thru' the Boscitto Gardens & past Vendala Palace - one of the Governor's Residences. This palace is built on a steep hill over-looking a deep valley planted with thousands of orange & other fruit trees - these are the Boscitto Gardens. We came back thru' Città Vecchia, the old capital & such a fascinating spot. It was all just lovely.
This hospital is one of the largest on the Island. In pre-war days it was the artillery barracks.
