The inscription reads: "In memory of John Stewart, Fourth Earl of Atholl, Lord High Chancellor of Scotland, who died 1579, and was entombed here with great solemnity. Monument Restored 1879."
John Stewart was the Fourth Earl of Atholl. He voted against the reformation in 1560 and declared adherence to the Roman Catholic faith. He became a close adviser to Mary, Queen of Scots. He was prosecuted for being Catholic and threatened with excommunication. He died in 1597 after a sudden illness, which many suspected was due to poisoning.
