Wester Hailes Shopping Centre was opened in 1974. This was designed to meet the needs of the local community. In 1978 a Job Centre was opened inside the shopping centre. A £9 million redevelopment of the centre was undertaken in 1994 which included an extensive refurbishment of the existing building, and a new cinema complex, bingo hall and library.
