John Crabbie & Co. Ltd was founded in the mid-19th century when John Crabbie acquired a brewery between Yardheads and Great Junction Street in Leith. As well as being a whisky and gin business, Crabbie’s also produced fruit-based cordials, including the now famous green ginger wine.

Green ginger wine was made in Leith until the 1980s when the company was taken over and production moved to West Lothian. Crabbie’s is also well-known for its alcoholic ginger beer, part of a strong heritage of alcohol production and warehousing in Leith.

Leith is situated in the north of Edinburgh where the Water of Leith joins the Firth of Forth. It has acted as Edinburgh's maritime connection for many centuries, and continues to be one of the UK's busiest ports. It was incorporated into Edinburgh in 1920 having previously been a separate burgh. It is now home to the Scottish Executive's main offices, Edinburgh's Sikh temple, the Royal Yacht Britannia and Ocean Terminal, a large shopping and entertainment complex.
