Description
A large group of children stand on either side of a salesman and his donkey. The donkey wears a harness and some of the man's goods can be seen behind the children, including a row of chairs and a rail of garments. Some of the children are barefoot. Most of the boys wear flat caps, but one boy to the left wears a large straw hat.

This is a photograph from 'The Life History of a Slum Child' focusing on the community living in the Canongate. The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace.
