Title
The Eastern Cottage, Chapter 50 (Azumaya) from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
This print depicts a man in a purple kimono positioned by a gate. The man is shown raising his woven straw hat. His kimono is patterned with a floral design and at his waist he wears a samurai sword. He has wrapped a red cape around his shoulders and on his feet he wears heavy wooden clogs (geta). Behind the gate, a woman stands holding a parasol. She wears red ribbons and ornaments in her hair, a red kimono and a green patterned obi belt. The gate and the brushwood fence form a barrier that separates the two figures. This may be an illicit meeting.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Azumaya', Chapter 50. In this chapter Kaoru communicates with Ukifune's mother and expresses his interest in her daughter. Kaoru is considered to be above Ukifune's station and her mother does not take his courtship seriously. Instead she makes plans to marry Ukifune to a Lieutenant of the Left Palace Guards and a date is set for their union. When the Lieutenant discovers that the Governor of Hitachi is not Ukifune's father he sends an intermediary to speak to the Governor to secure a more socially ambitious match. The Governor agrees to give the Lieutenant his favourite daughter and their wedding takes place on the same date that he was expected to marry Ukifune. When the Governor's wife discovers what has happened she decides to move Ukifune to a secret place to spare her from further humiliation.
Ukifune is taken to Naka no Kimi's residence and is reacquainted with her half sister. Niou discovers Ukifune in the west wing and sleeps with her. Unaware that she is related to his wife he mistakenly takes Ukifune for a gentlewoman in his wife's service. Naka no Kimi is used to her husbands philandering ways and does not blame Ukifune for this unfortunate turn of events. Ukifune's mother is informed of the situation and she decides to move her daughter to a little house in Sanjo.
Kaoru visits the nun, Ben, at Uji and insists that she travels in search of Ukifune and delivers his message to her. Shortly after Ben discovers Ukifune's whereabouts and conveys Kaoru's message, Kaoru arrives at the house and abducts Ukifune, returning with her to Uji. Kaoru discovers that Ukifune closely resembles Oigimi but lacks her dead half sister's depth and cultivation. However, Kaoru decides that he can teach her an appreciation of finer things.
