Title
Lizzie - a once famous sour milk vendor
Description
This grotesque caricature depicts a large woman holding a bucket in each hand, wearing a bonnet and with a dummy in her mouth.

The poet, Donald Campbell has written a poem inspired by this character by Holt:

Lizzie

Lizzie dearly loves her work
She comes to town each day
Except for Sunday. At the kirk
She goes to sing and pray.
The city fathers have decreed*
No need for milk on the Sabbath Day!

*For many years, a city ordnance banned milkmaids from Edinburgh on a Sunday.
