Newhaven was a very close-knit community, living and working together in close proximity. Generations found their marriage partners from within the village. Newhaveners called outsiders 'blaggart strangers' and outsiders called Newhaveners 'Bow-Tows'. Bow-Tows was the term for a husband and wife. The husband was the Bow (float) and the wife was the Tow (hemp rope).
