As a pupil of the history painter Sir William Allan at the Trustees Academy, James Drummond also developed a keen awareness of Scottish history from a North European 'genre' and Romantic perspective. In the case of Sabbath Evening, it also anticipates the Pre-Raphaelites in its intense realism and detailed symbolism.
Drummond was also a good topographical watercolourist and recorded many of the streets of Victorian Edinburgh prior to their demolition. He was appointed Keeper of the National Gallery of Scotland in 1868.
